Blood Stream Infections (Bacteremia)
What is Bacteremia?
Bacteremia is an infection of the blood.
If left untreated it can spread the infection to other parts of the body and cause serious complications (heart infection/IE, bone infection/osteomyelitis, brain infection).
Signs and Symptoms
- Fever
- Shaking Chills
- High Heart Rate
- Low Blood Pressure
- Confusion
- Fatigue
Treatment
Bloodstream infections require urgent medical care and IV antibiotics to help get your infection under control and prevent it from spreading.
Part of the work-up may include labs and different imaging tests to ensure that the bacteria has not spread to other parts of the body.
